It comes in a variety of styles, but Paolo Scavino Rocche dell’Annunziata Barolo Riserva has been described as “one of the great wines in Italy.” The wine has an intense ruby red color with garnet reflections. On the nose, there are hints of violets and blackberries with slight notes of vanilla. When tasting this wine, you will find it to be full-bodied and spicy on the palate with flavors like dark berries, cinnamon spice, and ripe fruit. This wine pairs well with game meats such as venison or boar; roasted duck; or grilled lamb chops!

My experience

This is a deep, brooding Barolo with notes of smoke, tar, licorice, and dark fruit gradually emerging from the glass. The Rocche, like Scavino’s other 1996 wines, begins to show just tertiary nuances, and also promises to be very rewarding to drink for many years to come. Perhaps Scavino is most famous for its Barolo Bric del Fiasc, though for me its Riserva from the Rocche dell’Annunziata vineyard is its best wine. With its characteristically perfumed nose, silky fruit and fine underlying tannins are the most elegant and refined of Scavino’s Barolos. Overall, Rocche dell’Annunziata is a wine with a broader drinking window, which is typical of Barolos from La Morra, although the early drinkability of 1990 does not seem to affect the wine’s aging potential. I thoroughly enjoyed several of the bottles from the 1998 and 1999 vintages that I recently tasted.
