An immigrant from Italy named Giuseppe Musante sells homemade wines out of a tent when he first arrived in California. He planted many different types of vines and continued to make his private label until 1881. He partnered with a local winemaker and opened up the first commercial winery in Lodi.

Lodi wines continued to grow as more immigrants arrived from Europe, but until Prohibition, the industry truly flourished. Many of these winemakers were able to produce sweet or semi-sweet wines, which became very popular during this period when other types of alcohol were illegal. This type of wine was transported and sold across state lines, which helped the industry continue growing throughout Prohibition even though it had been outlawed for other types of liquor.

Lodi wines also became popular in California, especially with migrant workers who settled here after World War I. They continued to make their homemade wines until the early 1960s when the state government passed a law that required all homemade wines to be made with at least 80% grapes.

Many of these immigrants made wine in their home countries, which included different fruits and flavorings, but this new law required them only to use grape juice or concentrate instead. Because they were used to making wines with grapes, they continued to make wine in their homes using the required ingredients.

Lodi still has a thriving grape-growing industry today, but it is now one of the most popular tourist destinations for those interested in California wines. There are many wineries that people can visit throughout Lodi which offer tours and tasting experiences. Many of these wineries are located right in the heart of downtown Lodi where people can also see murals and other artwork which celebrate its rich history.
